Health Matters: Hepatitis C

uctelevision asked:

It is estimated that one in every 10 Americans have Hepatitis C. Known as “a silent killer,” many people are unaware they are infected, leaving them vulnerable to liver damage and other health problems. To help us better understand this, Tarek Hassanein, M.D., Medical Director of Liver Transplantation and Chief of Clinical Hepatology at UCSD, educates us on Hepatitis C, including the latest treatment options, while Stan Miller, respected anchor at Channel 8 evening news, bravely shares the story of his own Hepatitis C diagnosis. Series: “Health Matters” [4/2007] [Health and Medicine] [Show ID: 12229]

good- except for the somewhat needless classist disparaging of “drug users in alleyways”-

Thanks, I’m now into my 27th week of treatment for Hep C and it looks like it’ll be a success, but I still have 21 weeks left.

Yes,I too weathered the treatment….no success, however, the effort towards a solution is always worth the shot regardless of outcome, success or no.Hang in there and take care my friend.

We need to stand up and DEMAND universal medical care. What a farce, we supposedly have the biggest economy in the world and we are jerked around by for-profit insurance companies. Medically, we are a third world country. What difference does it make if we have the best doctors, but no one has access? WhenIi read about people not having insurance and being shut out of medical treatment, or not being able to afford treatment because the insurance co-pays are too much, I become enraged.

Dr. Hassanein is my physician and I am not a rich TV anchorman. Hassanein is a fine man. I have tried more than once to take interferon and beat Type 1 HCV, failing each time with viral rebound within days of stopping treatment. But at least I have put off death a bit longer. Thank you Tarek.

Excellent. Yes the treatment sucks. I’m surprised to hear that the 4 million Americans infected is just an ESTIMATE, with 5 million closer to the truth.

Thanks, I’m 53, a former newspaper editor/publisher attempting the last eight years to survive with online ventures, now a lover of YouTube and produce videos, and I have Hep C in Stage 4 Genotype 1 cirrhosis 1+ and it sounds like my road is going to be much rougher, bumpier and perhaps more difficult. I’ve known 10 years but barriers of depression, etc., had to be overcome and I’m set for April 23 to see my doctor to start treatment, at least that’s my hope. I’m raising 3 grandkids… Bill

The blood supply is not completely safe. It is not wise to believe a health care provider who frames anything about health care today in those terms. There are plenty of ways to get HCV via our health care system via blood transfusions, multi-dose vials of anesthetic medications, cadaver tissue, immune globulins, Also nurse practitioners can order testing as well as treatment and follow you through treatment.

In’97-’98, I found I had HCV. The ONLY way I have been treating it WILL be, is thru nutrition, vitamins herbs.Interferon, Ribavirin etc… are nightmarish stuff! I’m a RN a homeopathic practioner have seen patients undergo horrendous side effects.U are NOT a candidate if u have any hx. of depression. 1 MD I know is in recovery.4 of his pts. committed suicide.Try searching for alternative medicine re:treating HCV. Other countries have been doing this for YRS. with VERY promising results.

It some cases it is possible to treat Hepatitis C using herbs and supplements. These alternative herbs/supplements may not remove the virus but will allow the body to live with the virus.

Very informative and on track. We must eliminate the stigma and increase awareness so that more people will get tested treated. We need $ for further research. Remember that at least 50% of those who have suffered thru 6-12 mnths of treatment are still sick and currently without options.

Just diagnosed at 53 and too far along to do treatment….GET TESTED for Hep C today or at least add it on to your next blood work test! Treatment is allot easier than a liver transplant or death.
